One of the primary factors contributing to the oxidation resistance of Incoloy UNS N08825 Sockolets is its high chromium content, typically ranging from 19-23%. This oxide layer acts as a barrier against oxygen and prevents further oxidation of the underlying material. The chromium oxide layer formed on the surface of Incoloy WNR 2.4858 Threadolets undergoes a process called passivation. Passivation occurs when the alloy is exposed to an oxidizing environment, such as air or high-temperature gases. During passivation, a thin layer of chromium oxide forms and covers the surface, preventing further reaction with the surrounding environment. This passivation process contributes to the long-term oxidation resistance of this alloy.
The chromium oxide layer acts as a protective barrier, effectively preventing oxygen diffusion into the alloy and hindering the formation of additional oxide layers. This layer is dense, adherent, and highly resistant to spelling or flaking, ensuring the integrity of the protective coating. The protective oxide layer significantly reduces the oxidation rate of Nickel Alloy 825 Flexolets and enhances its overall oxidation resistance. This alloy demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance even at elevated temperatures. The protective chromium oxide layer remains stable and continues to provide effective protection against oxygen ingress and subsequent oxidation. This high-temperature performance makes the alloy suitable for applications in furnace components, heat exchangers, and other high-temperature equipment where oxidation resistance is critical.
